Barming 3 - 1 Eagles
We were pleased to arrive to find a 3G pitch. After weeks of playing on solid ground that felt less forgiving than tarmac, the artificial surface was a welcome change — although it would bring its own challenges later in the game.
There were three competitive debuts for Callum Kennedy, Luke Adby and Muhammad Hassan, alongside plenty of familiar faces.
A special mention must go to Alex Burns, who reached an incredible 250 appearances for the club. A huge congratulations to Alex for his years of hard work and dedication, both on and off the pitch.
Now, onto the football.
The opening 20 minutes were cagey, with both sides seeing plenty of the ball and looking to exploit the wide areas. Eagles had the first real chance when a superb long ball from Chukwuma Umunna released Theo Sootarsing into the box. Theo beat his man but unfortunately dragged his effort wide.
Barming would take the lead shortly afterwards. A throw in from the right allowed their right winger to find space behind the defence. He reached the byline and drilled the ball across the six-yard box, where an overload of Barming players left Luke Adby with little chance in the Eagles goal. 0–1.
After the water break, Eagles began to see more of the ball, although much of it remained in our own half. The long ball over the wide centre-backs continued to cause problems, but physical challenges were making it difficult for Theo and Shaun to make progress into the opposition box.
Barming doubled their lead before half time. Another high ball wasn't dealt with properly by the Eagles defence, eventually resulting in a corner. The delivery pinballed around the box before unfortunately finding its way through the keeper's legs and into the net. 0–2.
Half time brought a chance to regroup, with Archie Buck, Adam Hunt and Gus Talbot introduced for the second half.
Unfortunately, the second half followed a similar pattern. Eagles enjoyed decent possession while Barming dropped deeper to protect their two-goal advantage. They soon extended it to three, with another ball played wide and across the six-yard box after the Eagles defence was drawn towards the winger. A frustratingly familiar goal. 0-3.
That goal did, however, spark Eagles into life. Becoming more aggressive, pushing higher up the pitch and controlling large periods of possession. Unfortunately, a stubborn Barming defence, packed with bodies, proved difficult to break down.
Barming still threatened on the counter, with their long balls exploiting a tiring and increasingly high Eagles defence. We were fortunate not to concede a fourth, with Luke Adby making an excellent one-on-one save. A bizarre refereeing decision also added to the frustration when play continued after the ball struck one of the pitch's guide wires, diverting it away from Archie Buck and allowing the striker to get a shot away.
Eagles continued to make attacking changes in search of a way back into the game, and eventually found one. A long-range effort was fumbled by the Barming goalkeeper, allowing Adam Hunt to react quickest and finish tidily. 1–3.
Unfortunately, the goal came too late to spark a comeback, with Barming seeing out the remaining minutes to claim all three points.
An ultimately frustrating afternoon, with a number of individual mistakes proving costly and leaving Eagles to reflect on what might have been.
